ABOUT TE ARA HURA

The Te Ara Hura trail is a stunning walking track around Waiheke Island. Te Ara Hura means ‘Discover the Way’ and that is surely what you will do, seeing the real Waiheke, one step at a time.

To walk the trail is to really discover Waiheke Island, from the fabulous coastal headlands with million dollar views, the picturesque beaches dotted with quirky, quaint baches that give Waiheke its magical character, to the forest heart of the island with lush native bush, regenerating forests, streams, wetlands and birdlife aplenty, and on down to the far end of the Island – huge vistas, stunning coastal farms, rural, untouched and very, very New Zealand.

This self-guided walk is done in 4 or 5 segments from 13km to 23km per day and offers a fabulous multi-day walk that encompasses the best of Waiheke Island scenery, character, landscape and food & wine. Everything is covered, from strolling the village foot paths to hiking through challenging terrain. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

We love this ‘bests bits version’ - 85km.

Day 1. Matiatia ferry terminal to Onetangi. 18km. A day to start discovering magical Waiheke, from the fabulous coastal headlands with million dollar views, the picturesque beaches dotted with quirky, quaint baches (beach houses) that give Waiheke its magical character. (Option to do 12km version, and finish at Palm Beach).

Day 2. Onetangi to Passage Rock or Orapiu. Options for 17km, 23km or 28km including Stony Batter. The Big skies day, follow quiet farm roads with amazing views to what the locals call ‘the bottom end’.

Day 3. Passage Rock to Rangihoua. 23km of spectacular bush and coast trails including some challenges. Venture through the forest heart of the island with lush native bush, regenerating forests, streams, wetlands and birdlife aplenty. (12km and 18km options available).

Day 4. Anzac Bay to Matiatia. 22km including wetlands, beaches, quirky baches and stunning coastal headlands. (13km option and finish at Mudbrick Winery options available).

The fine print

To complete the trail in 4 days involves 6-8 hours per day walking to cover 13-23km per day. Most people find if their normal walking pace is 5km/h they will average 3km/h over the hills and tracks. Some days are easier, with more country roads than narrow tracks and steps. The elevations are varied but it is all quite hilly (with beautiful views)! The highest point on the island is Mt Maunganui at 230m but when walking the entire track you will cover close to 3000m of ascent over the 85km.

With iWalkWaiheke, we can be very flexible with how far you walk each day, as we offer a pick up from where you get to!
